Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, carrying a rugby team, crashes on a glacier in the Andes. The few passengers who survive the crash find themselves in one of the world's toughest environments to survive.

The film portrays two of the three Fuerza Aérea de Chile Hueys that participated in the rescue of survivors, serials H-89 (c/n 11265) and H-91 (c/n 11465). H-90 (c/n 11264), which also participated, is not portrayed.
Scenes filmed in the valley use UH-1H models, matching the actual aircraft used in the rescue.
