The Caudron R.4 was a French twin-engine biplane of the mid-1915. Intended for the bomber role, it was not retained as that by the (French) Aéronautique Militaire. After several air accident (one of them killing Gaston, one of the Caudron brother), the type was reinforced and eventually ordered as a heavy reconnaissance aircraft. Regarding the successful G.IIIs and G.IVs based on a pod and boom designs, the R designs had a fuselage and ailerons. The three crew members were in three bays with the pilot just behind the wing trailing edge. A front wheel and under fuselage mast and bracing are visible.
Later design was the more powerfull and tail-skid R.XI (R.11) used as a heavy long-range escort fighter with vertical cabin mast instead the two conical bundles of the R.IV.
