Category:Douglas XB-19

The Douglas XB-19 was a four-engined prototype for a long-range bomber (it was known too as XBLR-2). Its wingspan of 64 meters (212 feet) was wider than any other until 1946 and the Convair B-36 Peacemaker and twice the Boeing B-17's one. The same program gives the Boeing XB-15, both intended to study "the maximum feasible range into the future." If the Boeing XB-15 led later to the Boeing B-17, the Douglas XB-19 need three years to be built and after two years of tests by the Army was used for some cargo flights. Neverless, its outstanding specifications but poor performance gave it no chance to escape to be scrapped in 1949.
