User talk:LVCDC
Welcome to IMPDb!
Thanks for joining The Internet Movie Plane Database LVCDC!
It great to see you getting involved and looks like you will be a good asset to the project! I know that the viewing community, including myself and the other users are appreciative of anything you can do to help. Since the site is so young, we are a long way from where we want to be.
There is a new users page which can help make the site easier to use. If you are interested in getting more involved, you could also register on the forum to publicly discuss site ideas, and other aviation info and thoughts.

Pages w/o screenshots
A page without the proper screenshots would simply be an incomplete page. You are welcome to start it, but we would ask that you work on getting the screenshots one day soon, somehow. If you are real interested in building the page and there is absolutely no way for you to get the actual shots, you can ask for help on that new page's discussion tab. Also feel free to ask me, Bthebest, or Sixcyl for help anytime on our talk pages if the new users page doesn't answer your questions. You should add information about yourself and how you got interested in in aviation on your user page. Thanks again! Tobin Lee 22:37, 6 April 2012 (MDT)
- Thanks !
- I will try first some search of video extract on the web and if I'll failed, I'll contact you as kindly offered. [LVCDC 7th Apr 2012]

Page format and rules
Hello LVCDC, thanks again for your contributions.
For the sake of unity in the presentation of film pages, it would be fine to respect some of the follwing rules:
- Capital letter for the first letter of the first word of comments, and full spot at the end (even in comments on pictures)
- Comments are placed above the pictures never below it.
- The inside picture text are better for legend such as "aircraft type+ owner", rather than comments.
- Uploaded pictures should be safe from black borders (resizing it).
Thanks! Sixcyl 11:25, 22 May 2012 (MDT)
Thanks to note and correct all my mistakes. I must take care to avoid such errors but coding for a long page is sometimes confusing despite previews. I hope this will not occur again. LVCDC 22 May 2012
Unfinished Pages
Hi,
Further to my reply on the forum, I have created a template for unfinished pages:
This page needs completing!
This page has been identified as unfinished and with no recent activity. Anyone is free to work on it, new users can find more information here. |
To use, type
{{Template:Unfinished Page}}
at the top of the page. An example is A Repülés Története .

Thanks !
- I've applied this to the pages I've made from trailers which are probably uncomplete. LVCDC 15 july 2012
Expendables 2
I just wanted to say thanks for the awesome films you contribute to the site like Expendables. Hopefully when the film comes out we can get some even better quality shots. The ones posted are surprisingly good though. Tobin Lee 19:07, 29 July 2012 (MDT)
Misiles etc
Just so you know, missiles and other flying munitions aren't included on the website. Got to draw the line somewhere! Bthebest - IMPDb Administrator 12:40, 29 December 2012 (MST)
- Sorry for the mistake; I was unsure about the AGM-65 but sure about the Hawk Missile as I found it on other pages... LVCDC 13:00, 29 December 2012 (MST)
- So exit the French movie "L'an 01" in which we can see this Malafon built by Latécoère : . A strange movie about a 'new' society as some utopists have dreamt during the early seventies. LVCDC 05:14, 8 February 2016 (MST)
Russian/Soviet Registrations
I've been writing them as CCCP because that seems to be the most common format when I search for the registrations on Google. However, if you think it would be better to write them as USSR or in Cyrillic, I'll do that in the future. I think that writing them as CCCP and in Cyrillic would be the best choice, but I am certainly no expert on this. Corkeyandpals 18:05, 25 February 2014 (MST)
R.U.S.E Ki-57
The only picture I could find of it was very small, and I didn't think it was worth adding. I'll add it now, though. Corkeyandpals 16:05, 30 March 2014 (MDT)
Re: Categories
First off, I feel that leaving categories as red links is better than creating them but leaving the page blank because it makes them easier to find when I finally get around to writing them. It also doesn't fool readers into thinking there's writing on them when there's not. Secondly, I believe the primary purpose of having aircraft categories is allowing readers to find other films and things that feature that aircraft, rather than inform them about the aircraft. That's why the pages have Wikipedia links. So, I create categories before writing them so readers know that aircraft can be seen in multiple works on the site. The synopsis is less necessary, and can wait until I or someone else has time to write them. Corkeyandpals 17:30, 14 June 2014 (MDT)
Fake Accounts
Thanks for deleting pages so far. You can stop now though, as I will go and remove them completely. Bthebest - IMPDb Administrator 13:13, 9 August 2014 (MDT)

Minimising Image Use
Hi LVCDC, I'm mentioning this to everyone, so nothing personal. The reason for the site going offline recently, and the bigger adverts, is we require more data storage. To try and avoid these problems, we need to be careful about how many images we upload. To achieve this, please only add images to pages that add value - ideally this should be 1 or 2 images of the aircraft, plus a close-up of the registration or other feature if necessary. 5 images is the maximum, not the recommended.
Thanks for all your work and co-operation. Bthebest - IMPDb Administrator 14:09, 25 August 2014 (MDT)
- That's already my way to built new pages. But the bug with auto-resizing pictures let me to post under the PNG format which weights 5 times the JPG one. I wish this could be fix quickly, so JPG will have my favor again. LVCDC 06:13, 26 August 2014 (MDT)
- Hold fire on identifying the obsolete images. I'm currently establishing how to permanently remove the data to get the most benefit out of this task. Bthebest - IMPDb Administrator 10:16, 28 August 2014 (MDT)
- Alright but take care as some have been unlinked without replaced by better ones nor being in excess number. I DID not yet find those used on the forum. LVCDC 10:21, 28 August 2014 (MDT)
Categories in Medicopter 117
I dont want to revert your edit before asking you. Why did you delete Category:Short SC.7 Skyvan from the category list of Medicopter 117. Was it just an accident? --Mieguy 17:04, 30 August 2014 (MDT)
- So sorry ! It's an error when I moved the Unidentified category fromm footnote to the aircraft section itself. I don't understand how I could do that but I see no more explanation... as the category is still just over the screenshot ! Thanks for your survey and all my apologies. Of course, the footnote is now in order. LVCDC 10:07, 31 August 2014 (MDT)

Re: New Categories
It's merely meant to be a proposal; an example of what we could do with the idea. It's not final by any means. You bring up plenty of good points that we need to think about if we end up following through on the airline project, but I don't think that's a good reason to just not do it. I think there are plenty of people who would be interested in seeing that kind of data; what airlines appear in what movies, so it wouldn't be a pointless move. And if it did become an official part of the site, of course you wouldn't be required to add it to your list of checks when you create a page, I'd be happy to do it by myself if no one else wants to. And as for the number of airlines, just because that many exist doesn't mean they all appear in media. I seriously doubt we'll ever have a list that long.
Basically, the airline category I posted is just a trial run, your complaints are all valid and should probably be rectified if we continue down this path, and your worries about the workload that this project will produce are unwarranted, as I'll happily take care of this project myself if no one else is interested.
Regards, Corkeyandpals 10:14, 10 December 2014 (MST)
- What's worried me the most ais the risk of melting categories aircraft / airline ; if you could find a way like the one use for Common Locations, this will not complicate the check of the different categories !
- BTW, you will be surprise to find some rareties among airlines, as like among aircrafts (Ryan XV-5 Vertifan, Breda-Zappata BZ.308, Leningradskii-Kombinat INAH-1 and so many other single airfame productions). And what about fictionnal airlines (Honeymoon Airways in Suivez cet avion for example) ? I'm sure they are numerous ! LVCDC 10:12, 11 December 2014 (MST)
- I think using a method like Common Aircraft and Locations for airlines would be considerably more difficult, considering just how common some of them are (Pan Am, Lufthansa, etc.) If we use categories, to distinguish them from aircraft categories we could just establish an arbitrary rule on pages for movies, like listing aircraft categories first, then airline categories. Beyond that, having the airlines in the Airlines category should help users tell the difference, especially if it is added to the sidebar like Common Locations was. As for rare airlines, I would just say we use the same strategy we use with rare aircraft and create a category when it appears twice. And unless it's clearly based on a real airline, I'd say we avoid creating categories for fictional airlines, or make a general Fictional Airlines category. Corkeyandpals 05:49, 12 December 2014 (MST)
I agree 100% with all points here. For the fictional Airlines, I suggest indeed to create a specific category in parallel to the Airlines category. In that way, some aircrafts would breed a presence in both category ( for instance see fictional planes based on World Airways ).
Another point I'd like to express with you: Airlines category must cover all kind of public transportation companies,
National flags Airlines,
Privates Airlines,
Regional and commuter Airlines,
Taxi aircraft,
Helicopter public transportation,
Travel club agencies (dedicated charters).
Should be excluded all aeroclubs, private personnal, business aircraft. These possibly introduced in another category.

Pictures for Deletion
Thanks for your work in identifying pictures for deletion. For all future ones though, can you add the banner and comments to the actual picture page rather than the discussion page, as the discussion page has to be deleted separately. Bthebest - IMPDb Administrator 08:40, 18 January 2015 (MST)
- Also, if you are directly replacing a picture with a better quality or modified one, you can choose to 'upload a new version of this file' instead of creating a new file.Bthebest - IMPDb Administrator 08:44, 18 January 2015 (MST)
- OK I'll take care of these two points. But most of the time, when I try to 'upload a new version of this file', the upload is right but the page fails to display the new version ! LVCDC 03:15, 19 January 2015 (MST)
Problèmes avec IMPDb
Bonjour Frank.

A te lire ... LVCDC (talk) 17:34, 11 September 2016 (MDT)
LVCDC (talk) 14:28, 23 October 2016 (MDT)

Yes, two times.
Happy to read some words by an admin !
I'm afraid the REAL and MAIN danger is the size of some screenshot added by some contributors. A picture of 2 GB has no place on IMPDB. Many visual encyclopedia have a maximum size allowed or (like IMCDB) a process to automatic resizing pictures. Regards. LVCDC (talk) 05:53, 28 June 2017 (MDT)
- I wasn't aware there were files that large being uploaded. I will work to configure a maximum file size on upload and let you know when it's implemented. What max size do you think would work? 1920x1080? Smaller? I wonder if we're getting screenshots from 4k movies.
- Mark0 and I are having a conversation about thumbnail sizes, which I made changes to yesterday. Default view size is now 250px and there are less thumbnail size options which should limit the number of thumbnails the db generates on parse. We're still getting blank thumbnail windows, however.

- I just checked the server config and found max file size right now should be 100MB, which is still way to big. Limiting file size is specified in KB instead of pixel size. Today I'm going to drop this to 3MB unless you think it is to small. I'll see what Tobin thinks too as hey has more experience adding content to the site than I do.

- You're right : what about the size of some Screenshot (last 27 June) : 1,15 GB for http://impdb.org/index.php?title=File:TCSCC_BH6.jpg !
- Why a single pix of 2 Gb needs much more space than one of the biggest page (Wings of Russia (1st part), 600+ pix with only a total of 25 Mo) ?
- Sometimes ago, there was a debate about the basis of the site : do we need high quality pictures or just a pix to illustrate the inventary ?
- As for the oldest movies we could never reach HQ, I think that a good "thumb" is sufficient. In fact, no mater the size as we can give a standart format with the [[image:||]] command; but the DB should reject pix weighting more than 250 KB or at least downsized them.
- And the HELP section should have a 'How To' about the use the automatic donwsizing through the most common picture/photo software.
- And Yes ! we just need a thumb and the original upload picture; no need of three or four different sizes.
Regards. LVCDC (talk) 10:13, 28 June 2017 (MDT)
- Hi Mark0! You're right : typo error, my fault !
- It seems IMPDB is facing problems of DB size. If we could help in posting lighter files (JPG instead PNG, JPG with lower quality / higher compression)... For example, the same file (2,97 MB) saved at 80% weights only 1,47 MB for the same 3648x2736 px.
- Some viewer (for ex. Irfanview [freeware]) includes a "batch conversion" with "save options" through which you can choose between new size and/or new weight and even max. size (in KB).
- I think IMCDB has too small pix but despite this they run 51,000+ pages for nearly a million cars ... without 'donate' button ! No miracle, just good rules and active admins (I guess ...). LVCDC (talk) 14:00, 28 June 2017 (MDT)
- Thank you to both of you. I am going to dig into this this weekend and see what I can do to improve the situation. I don't mind allowing/keeping nice size images, but there are likely improvements to be made. Lets continue this discussion here, which I just created.

Will a simple credit do, or shall I add a link to the IMPDB page in question?
While I'm here, the identification of Spitfire P8074, as the aircraft used to represent K5054 in The First of the Few, came from Aeroplane magazine's June 2016 edition, page 16 - This Month's Answers. According the the Q&A entry, the CO of 501 Squadron, 'Bunny' Currant, did most of his flying for the film in this aircraft, and it appeared not to have used for any other flying - at least according to his logbook - making P8074 the most likely candidate.
