The Short Sunderland was very successfull throughout the war due to a continuous work to improve the type. One of the intended mark (Mk IV) was a new design using major structural elements of the Sunderland Mark III and Bristol Hercules (in place of the Bristol Pegasus to gain 600hp). The first flight on On 30 August 1944 led to several extensive changes so the name was changed to Seaford. New test postponed the production to April 1945 and so the thirty airframes ordered were reduced to only eight and the two prototypes. In 1948, operational trials were stopped and No. 201 Squadron RAF disbanded. Her Seaford were modified as civilian airliners becoming Short Solent 3 in addition to the twelve Short Solent 2 and four Solent 4 built straight as civilian version.
