Keith Rider was the designer of a series of racing aircraft. From the first R-1 to the R-6, his designs were based on low-wing slim aircraft powered by inline engines.
The Rider R-1 (and the closest R-2) was a cigar-shape metalic fuselage to hoist an inline engine with a fixed conventional landing gear. Wings were of wood covered by fabric.
The R-3 came eventually to a very different shape and name once modified from the basic accidented 1933 Keith-Rider R-3 : a very different final modification (by receiving a Twin Wasp Jr radial engine and redesigned wing) and great performing of the basic R-3 called Marcoux-Bromberg, in honor who financed the modifications. The Marcoux-Bromberg Special was always piloted by Earl Ortman. In 1938 he won the Golden Gate Classic, set a record from Oakland to San Diego of 1 hour and 48 minutes and participated at the 1938 and 1939 Thompson Trophy.
The next two racers were powered by a 6-cylinder, inverted, inline, air cooled Menasco engine. The only significant difference between the R-4 and R-5 was the R-5’s wings were two feet longer, adding 80 pounds to the empty weight of the aircraft.
A last engineering gave the unfortunate Rider R-6 before World War Two stopped air racing and put an end to Keith Rider activity.
Only one airframe was built for each of these racing aircraft.
