The Dornier Do 18 was a German flying boat developed for the Luftwaffe. Its shape was a metal hull fitted with distinctive stabilising sponsons, and powered by two engines above the wing in a push-pull layout. The first five aircrafts were used by Lufthansa for tests between the Azores and the North American continent in 1936 and on their mail route over the South Atlantic from 1937 to 1939. Despite some impressive flights over the Atlantic and a world record in 1938, the Do 18 was obsolete by the outbreak of the war when pressed into service by the Luftwaffe. First used mainly on North Sea in reconnaissance missions, this vulnerable and underpowered flying boat was soon relegated to training and the air/sea rescue role. Despite nearly phased out at Summer 1941, it was then used at Travemünde for trials of ship detection equipment FuG 200. Late in the war, it was used in the Baltic Sea to combat Soviet submarines because diesel fuel at that time was still more available than aviation gasoline.
170 Do 18 were built between 1935 and 1940.
