Registration N39165 c/n 1404. Built in 1938 as Douglas R2D-1 BuNo 9993 for the US Navy, similar to Douglas C-39, a military variant of the DC-2 with DC-3-style tail section and Wright R-1820-45 radial piston engines. Purchased by Hollingstead Corporation in 1946 registered NC39165 and modified as Douglas DC-2-142. Sold to North American Airlines on November 1952 with registration N39165. Sold to D.W. Mercer in August 1954, then Mercer Enterprises in August 1955. Purchased by C W Darden III in September 1968. in 1983, PH-AJU /44 markings was applied to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the 1934 London to Melbourne Air Race - the aircraft was painted to represent the aircraft used in that Race It was painted as KLM s PH-AJU -named Uiver - to celebrate that airliner;s success in the race, winning the handicap section. Sold to Aviodrome Museum (Netherlands) in 1999. Still active there with new ownerhip of Aircraft Guaranty Corporation in September 2011.
The aircraft was used for this film in 1956, wearing a fictional airline livery: Pan-Latin Airlines / Aerea Pan-Latina.

Fireball Air Express name changed to Standard Airlines merged with Viking Airlines to form NAA-North American Airlines in 1946. North American Airlines merged with Twentieth Century Air keeping own name. Ceased operations in 1957. Not to be confused with the airline of 1990-2014.
